ScotRail resumes more services after Storm Eowyn caused ‘significant damage’

ScotRail Commences Restoration of Services Post Storm Eowyn Disruption

In the wake of Storm Eowyn causing extensive damage across Scotland, ScotRail is making significant progress in restoring railway services. Engineers from Network Rail have been deployed to address around 500 incidents on the railway lines since the storm hit the region, resulting in a surge in repair and maintenance operations.

The severe weather conditions, marked by a red weather warning for ‘danger to life’, led to the disruption of various rail services as high winds wreaked havoc across the country. Fallen trees, trampolines, and garden sheds were among the debris blown onto the tracks, necessitating a comprehensive cleanup effort to ensure safe and efficient travel.

Despite the challenges posed by the storm, ScotRail announced the reopening of most lines on Monday morning. Services have resumed between Helensburgh Central and Edinburgh Waverley, Glasgow Central and Kilwinning, as well as from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Stirling, Alloa, Dunblane, Perth, Aberdeen, and Inverness. However, repair work continues on the routes between Kilwinning and Ayr, Largs and Ardrossan due to severe damage to overhead wires.

Network Rail and ScotRail teams have been working tirelessly to address the aftermath of Storm Eowyn, with over 500 incidents reported, including fallen trees, damaged overhead wires, power supply failures, and obstructions on the tracks. Passengers are advised to check the ScotRail website and app for real-time updates on travel plans.

Ross Moran, Route Director for Network Rail Scotland, acknowledged the significant impact of the storm on railway infrastructure, particularly in the Central Belt and the West Coast Mainline. He expressed gratitude to the teams working round-the-clock to clear debris, repair damages, and ensure the safety of rail services for passengers.

In light of the disruptions caused by the adverse weather conditions, ScotRail is offering flexibility to affected customers, allowing them to travel with existing tickets up to Friday, January 31, or apply for a fee-free refund for unused tickets. The collaborative efforts of Network Rail and ScotRail underscore the resilience and commitment of railway services in overcoming challenges and ensuring the smooth operation of transportation networks.
