A father has been found guilty of murdering his teenage daughter, Scarlett Vickers, during a playfight in the kitchen. Simon Vickers was convicted of fatally stabbing the 14-year-old through the heart, despite denying both murder and manslaughter charges. Vickers claimed that Scarlett’s death occurred while they were ‘mucking around’ in the kitchen. He stated that he had consumed alcohol and marijuana on the evening that the incident took place. However, he insisted that he had no recollection of handling the knife that caused the fatal chest wound, which was 11cm deep.
Initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, Vickers was later re-arrested for murder after Scarlett succumbed to her injuries. The court heard Vickers express disbelief over the tragic turn of events, as he and Scarlett had been engaging in playful activities in the kitchen. Emergency services found Scarlett collapsed on the kitchen floor upon arrival at the family’s home in Darlington.
During the trial, Vickers maintained that the fatal injury was accidental, suggesting that Scarlett may have inadvertently come into contact with the knife in a moment of misfortune. However, prosecutors argued that the wound was too deep to have been caused unintentionally, implying that Vickers must have wielded the knife deliberately.
Furthermore, the Home Office pathologist’s testimony supported the theory that the knife was firmly held at the time of the stabbing, disputing Vickers’ claim of an accidental occurrence.
