In response to this crisis, Energy Secretary Michael Shanks recently visited the SP Energy Networks base in Cambuslang to oversee the ongoing restoration efforts. The minister met with dedicated staff coordinating repair operations and expressed his sympathy for affected constituents in areas like Cambuslang, Blantyre, and Uddingston.
Since the storm hit, engineers have been working tirelessly to bring back power to homes amidst challenging conditions, with multiple faults reported across the region. Despite the significant challenges, progress has been made, and as of Monday afternoon, around 5,000 customers in Scotland were still without power. SP Energy Networks has been providing essential support, including hot food vans for residents in severely impacted areas like Lanark and North Lanarkshire.
During his visit, Michael Shanks praised the hard work of teams at the emergency hub in Cambuslang who have been coordinating the reconstruction of damaged network areas efficiently. Helicopters have been deployed to assess damages and identify faults, and additional resources have been mobilized from across the UK to support the restoration efforts. The teams have also been proactive in reaching out to customers on the Priority Services Register to provide necessary assistance and support.
The storm not only caused power outages but also disrupted transportation services, with several train services in Lanarkshire experiencing closures and cancellations due to significant damages to tracks. Additionally, road maintenance and waste collection services have faced challenges, with delays and cancellations reported.
