North Lanarkshire Council’s Communities Committee is set to vote on the proposal for Motherwell to host a half-marathon this summer. The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, August 3, with the race commencing and concluding at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.
For several years, Active & Creative Communities (formerly North Lanarkshire Leisure) has organised an annual 10k event in the Cumbernauld area. This event, supported by the Suicide Prevention programme and local sponsors, draws approximately 800 participants yearly, featuring various races suitable for all ages and abilities, including toddlers’ races, 1k, 5k, and the main 10k event.
In late 2023, running enthusiasts approached the council expressing interest in hosting a half marathon in the Motherwell region. A committee report prepared by community operations officer Lyall Rennie outlined the formation of a short-life working group led by Active & Creative Communities to explore the feasibility of such an event. The Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility was identified as the most suitable start and finish point, providing space for family-friendly activities like soft-play and games alongside the race.
To ensure smooth traffic management and access to University Hospital Wishaw, a preferred race route was selected following consideration of various options. The proposed half-marathon aims to promote physical and mental well-being while fostering community engagement across North Lanarkshire.
The event’s estimated cost is around £60,000, with sponsorship and nominal fees from runners expected to offset some expenses. Plans also include involving schools for educational opportunities and engaging volunteers through the Volunteer NL programme.
This initiative showcases the council’s commitment to promoting active lifestyles, community involvement, and providing diverse recreational opportunities for residents. If approved, the Motherwell half-marathon could become a significant event encouraging health and fitness participation in the region.
