The report also showed a 10% reduction in drug-related attendances at A&E during the same timeframe. Moreover, incidents of naloxone administration, which is used to prevent heroin overdoses, decreased by 30%. The Rapid Action Drug Alerts and Response (Radar) report highlighted the widespread contamination of illicit drugs with toxic substances, indicating an urgent need for hospital toxicology services and accessible drug checking facilities across Scotland.
Furthermore, the report noted an increase in novel benzodiazepines circulating in Scotland, with cocaine continuing to be a primary contributor to drug-related harm. The figures did not include the impact of the UK’s first safer drug consumption facility, which recently opened in Glasgow. The facility, known as the Thistle Centre, recorded 131 attendances in its first week of operation, providing a crucial service to individuals struggling with drug misuse.
Health Secretary Neil Gray emphasised the government’s commitment to addressing drug-related challenges through initiatives such as the National Mission on drugs, which involves investing £250 million over five years.
