A Scottish drug trafficker, who positioned himself as a counter-surveillance expert for criminal gangs, has seen his prison sentence doubled. Ian Sweeney was initially sentenced to two years at the High Court in Glasgow for aiding serious organised crime groups in the country. Sweeney’s illicit activities came to light when the police uncovered his alias “Bug-sweep” on the EncroChat messaging platform, where he communicated with over 100 members of various crime syndicates. The 53-year-old amassed a significant wealth by advising criminal groups and providing them with equipment to detect police bugs in their vehicles, residences, and businesses. Additionally, he taught them how to modify their vehicles with hidden compartments to conceal drugs and weapons for smuggling without detection.
Sweeney pleaded guilty to his involvement in serious organised crime and the distribution of controlled substances, such as cocaine and cannabis, between March and May 2020. Subsequently, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service argued that his initial two-year sentence was insufficient. Following an appeal, Sweeney’s sentence was extended to five years and six months by the Appeal Court. He was also subjected to a Serious Crime Prevention Order upon his release from prison in December 2024. This order imposes stringent restrictions on his activities, including notifying the police of his movements and limiting his use of communication devices and anti-surveillance equipment to prevent him from re-engaging in criminal activities.
