A violent altercation in a Coatbridge pub resulted in a man biting off a chunk of another man’s ear, Airdrie Sheriff Court heard this week. Jordan Dick, 29, faced charges of assaulting the man to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement at The Vulcan on Main Street on March 1 the previous year. Despite the gruesome nature of the attack, Dick’s defence claimed he had acted in response to provocation from the victim, a claim which was accepted by the court.
According to records presented in court, Dick was at a table with three friends at the pub, while the victim was also present with a companion. Annette Ward, the prosecutor, stated that the two groups did not know each other prior to the incident. The altercation began when the victim’s friend approached one of the males in Dick’s group, pushing him off his chair and throwing a punch. Subsequently, a scuffle broke out, leading the victim to punch Dick, who then responded by biting off part of the victim’s ear.
CCTV footage of the brawl was reviewed in court, revealing further violent acts from both parties involved. The victim, after being bitten, was seen kicking a man who was on the floor. Despite the severity of the injuries sustained by the victim, including permanent disfigurement, he refused to cooperate with the police or provide access to his medical records. The court was informed that both the victim and his friend had already faced prosecution for their roles in the incident.
Given the circumstances and the acceptance of provocation by the defence, Sheriff Paul Haran called for background reports and deferred sentencing until the following month for further assessment.
