A new welcome wall has been unveiled in Newmains, providing a warm reception to visitors and commemorating the village’s history. Situated at the bustling Newmains Cross junction, the wall stands as a prominent addition to the community garden, visible from all angles. The structure incorporates ornate stonework salvaged from a former local primary school, preserving a significant aspect of the village’s past. To enhance the experience, a seating area has been incorporated at the back, strategically placed to face other artistic installations and the Jim Murray memorial statue, creating a tranquil spot for contemplation.
Furthermore, the front of the wall features built-in planters adopted by the NCT Gardening Group, with assistance from youngsters in the local youth club who partake in planting and upkeep activities. The recent unveiling ceremony was attended by representatives from Newmains & St Brigid’s Primary Schools, where students contribute to maintaining the planters. Additionally, members of Newmains & District Community Council, the NCT Centre, the gardening group, local councillors, and the council’s Community Partnership Team were present. Councillor Geraldine Woods, the council’s Convener of Communities, expressed pride in this initiative, stating that it not only enhances the visual appeal of the area but also reflects Newmains’ rich heritage.
The project was a collaborative effort involving the Community Partnership Team, Newmains & District Community Council, and the NCT Centre, with funding sourced from the Local Development Programme under council management. A second phase of the project is in the pipeline, which will include feature lighting and the installation of a plaque on the wall’s front to honour the steelworks, a vital component of Newmains’ industrial legacy. Councillor Robert John McKendrick highlighted on social media the incorporation of key stones from the former Newmains Primary School into the wall and outlined plans for a future plaque commemorating the iroworks.
