Shopkeepers in Scotland are facing a growing threat from gangs of thieves and career shoplifters who target stores on a daily basis. The rise in shoplifting incidents has not only affected the profits of businesses but also instilled fear among staff members who are constantly on edge. Shop owners are now calling for more community police officers to help deter these criminal activities.
One such shopkeeper, Jordan Trainer, the owner of Plantique in Glasgow, shared his experience of dealing with shoplifting. He highlighted the need for a stronger police presence to tackle low-level thefts effectively. Last year, the cost of shoplifting in Scotland reached a record £170 million, nearly double the figure from the previous year, according to the Scottish Retail Consortium.
Trainer described how he has had to become vigilant and watchful to prevent thefts, as gangs often employ distraction tactics to carry out their crimes. He emphasized the stress and financial losses incurred due to shoplifting incidents, calling for immediate police response to such crimes to protect small businesses.
Similarly, Umar Majid, the owner of Baba’s Kitchen in Lanarkshire, shared his dismay at the increasing frequency of shoplifting in his store. He recounted an incident where a group of workmen not only purchased items for lunch but also attempted to steal goods. Majid expressed frustration at the lack of deterrence and consequences for such criminal behaviour.
The Scottish Government has introduced legislation to protect shop workers, resulting in the conviction of 543 offenders in 2021. However, the British Retail Consortium’s Annual Crime Survey revealed that the police response to such incidents was rated as “poor” or “very poor” by 61% of respondents in the UK.
