Hamilton College Cross-Country Championships Experience Growth

The 2025 Hamilton College Cross-Country Championships received positive feedback after a successful event held at the Hamilton Park track for the first time. Nine independent schools from various parts of Scotland participated in the race, showcasing a shift from the usual four-legged competitors to two-legged runners on the track. Among the schools present were Hamilton College, Fernhill, St Columba’s (Renfrewshire), Belmont House and Jordanhill from Glasgow, Hutchesons’ Grammar, Merchiston Castle (Edinburgh), Strathallan (Perth), and Robert Gordon’s College (Aberdeen). Around 300 students competed in different distances, with Hamilton College’s head teacher, Richard Charman, expressing hopes for even wider participation in the upcoming years.

Hamilton College places a strong emphasis on physical education, encouraging students to develop a passion for physical activity through a comprehensive curriculum, diverse co-curricular activities, and quality teaching. The decision to host the school’s cross-country event at the Hamilton Park track aligned with this philosophy. Director of sport, Ross Horne, expressed gratitude towards the schools that participated, highlighting the joy of witnessing young individuals enjoy cross-country running in the picturesque setting of Hamilton Park.

Managing director of Hamilton Park, Ashley Moon, commended the students of all ages who partook in the event, hoping that they found as much enjoyment in participating as the hosts did in organising the championships. The event saw a mix of junior and senior students representing the school and embodying its values on the track. Plans are already in motion to expand the event next year, welcoming more students to compete and celebrate physical activity.

In conclusion, the 2025 Hamilton College Cross-Country Championships proved to be a successful and fulfilling event, bringing together students from various schools across Scotland in a display of sportsmanship and passion for running. The growth and participation witnessed this year set a promising precedent for future championships, fostering a culture of fitness and friendly competition among the youth.
