Guide Dog puppies paid a special visit to the Blantyre bus depot as part of an exciting new partnership with Scottish Citylink. The charity, Guide Dogs, which is dedicated to training assistance dogs for the visually impaired, has teamed up with Scottish Citylink to offer free bus travel for volunteers involved in puppy training. This initiative allows volunteers to practice essential public transport skills with the guide dog puppies across the regional network.
At the Blantyre base of Citylink subcontractor, Parks of Hamilton, puppies and their trainers had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with a bus, honing skills such as boarding, sitting, and disembarking in a calm and controlled setting. The aim of this partnership is to prepare the puppies for their future roles as guide dogs for blind and partially-sighted individuals. The collaboration marks a significant step in creating a supportive environment for the puppies’ development.
Guide Dogs, with a base in Hamilton, is actively seeking more volunteers to contribute to the training of guide dog puppies like George, a labrador cross golden retriever who began training in Lanarkshire last autumn. Volunteer puppy raisers can now benefit from free travel on any Citylink bus by presenting their Guide Dogs ID pass, facilitating their involvement in the training process.
Fiona Fraser, Puppy Development Supervisor, highlighted the importance of real-world training settings for the puppies’ growth. She expressed gratitude to Citylink for their provision of free travel for volunteers, emphasising the need to minimise distractions for the working dogs. Managing Director of Scottish Citylink, Simone Walsh, acknowledged the vital support guide dogs provide to those with sight loss, underlining the company’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience for all passengers, including those with mobility challenges.
