Hearts supporter receives football ban for racist behaviour while police vow to eliminate football violence
A Hearts fan has been slapped with a football banning order following a racist incident at the Edinburgh Derby on Boxing Day, with Police Scotland and the SPFL affirming their commitment to eliminating violent behaviour in football. The incident occurred at Tynecastle Stadium on December 26, where Hibernian FC player Jordan Obita was seen conversing with the police after a derogatory remark was directed towards substitutes in the dugout. A statement released by Hearts confirmed the expulsion of the fan, with authorities disclosing that this ban was one of six imposed in recent weeks.
Assistant Chief Constable Gary Ritchie emphasised that Police Scotland will employ all available resources to eradicate violent conduct in sports settings. Ritchie emphasised working in collaboration with clubs and courts to combat criminal activities, with the league expressing support for the stringent measures being implemented. Furthermore, several individuals faced charges for various offences during the Edinburgh Derby on Boxing Day, including a 46-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a racial abuse offence at the Edinburgh Sheriff Court on January 21.
Additionally, other banning orders were issued in connection with a distressing incident where a disabled Raith Rovers fan was ambushed by an aggressive group in a vicious attack in January last year. Notably, the convicted individuals were slapped with football banning orders, alongside community payback orders and restriction of liberty orders for their involvement in the violence. Moreover, three other men received football banning orders this month after admitting to offences, including breach of the peace and assault, during separate matches in 2023 and 2024.
