Three teenagers involved in a brutal murder in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, have been named and sentenced to a combined total of 72 years in prison. The trio, Kreisha Stroud, Jordan Tams, and Leandro Lopes, were responsible for the “senseless” killing of 40-year-old Gary Belfield and the stabbing of his son, Luke Williams.
Initially protected by anonymity due to their ages, the judge lifted the restrictions, unveiling their names and faces to the public. The attack, orchestrated by Stroud, aimed at seeking revenge over baseless allegations of assault targeting a relative of hers. Stroud, only 15 at the time, enlisted Tams, her boyfriend at 17, and Lopes, then 17 and now 18, to carry out the heinous crime.
On the night of the attack, Tams and Lopes, wearing balaclavas, stormed the victims’ home armed with weapons. Mr. Belfield was fatally stabbed multiple times, while Luke, who was also attacked, managed to escape. Stroud, although not physically present during the incident, showed callousness by expressing satisfaction over Mr. Belfield’s death and disappointment at Luke’s survival.
All three perpetrators have received life sentences, with Tams and Lopes facing a minimum of 26 years each and Stroud at least 20 years, taking into account her youth and significant role in planning the murder. A statement from Luke Williams described the devastating impact the crime had on their family, highlighting the senselessness and vile nature of the attackers.
The judge overseeing the case, Mr. Justice Constable, condemned the crime as a “dreadful attack,” noting its shocking brutality and orchestrations carried out by adolescents. Disturbing details revealed during the trial included Lopes stabbing Mr. Belfield with a screwdriver and Tams inflicting fatal knife wounds, resulting in the father’s tragic death.
In their defence, the teenagers’ troubled backgrounds, including previous criminal records and traumatic experiences, were presented. Stroud’s defence lawyer portrayed her as a damaged individual suffering from PTSD, while Tams’ lawyer highlighted his client’s emotional immaturity and exposure to violence during childhood.
The sentencing of these teenagers showcases the severity of their actions and the tragic consequences of their choices. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing underlying issues such as trauma, violence, and mental health in young offenders to prevent such senseless tragedies in the future.
