A significant number of individuals in Perth would be in favour of transforming Bell’s Sports Centre into an unheated sports venue, according to the results of a recent consultation. The consultation revealed that over 60% of participants support the idea of repurposing the centre for sporting activities without heating.
Last summer, Live Active Leisure ceased its operations at Bell’s Sports Centre, relocating its gym and fitness studios to Dewars Centre. In April 2024, just before its closure, the sporting facility was listed by Historic Environment Scotland as a category B building, with special architectural and historical significance attributed to its unique 1968 dome – the only one of its kind in Scotland.
Perth and Kinross Council conducted an online survey from November 11, 2024, to January 17, 2025, to gather opinions on the future use of Bell’s Sports Centre. Participants were asked about the importance of finding a future purpose for the facility, their frequency of using leisure facilities in Perth and Kinross, their stance on converting it into an unheated sports venue or event space, and the essential amenities they believe should be included, such as toilets, changing rooms, and a café.
The feedback from 1,981 respondents indicated that 77% believed it was “very important” for Bell’s Sports Centre to remain available for public activities, with an additional 15% considering it “important.” The majority, comprising 60.47%, agreed with the proposal to repurpose the centre as an unheated venue for sports pitches, while 91% emphasised the necessity of public toilets and 90% supported the provision of changing rooms.
In response to financial challenges and recurrent flooding issues at Bell’s Sports Centre, Perth and Kinross councillors voted in September 2024 to construct a new, energy-efficient leisure facility costing £61 million at Thimblerow Car Park. This modern facility would replace both Bell’s Sports Centre and Perth Leisure Pool, offering various amenities such as multiple pools, an indoor play area, gym, studios, and a café.
Council officials will now assess the public feedback and suggestions regarding Bell’s Sports Centre to prepare a comprehensive report for councillors. The report will serve as a basis for determining the future use of the centre.
