A mother from Dumfries and Galloway is championing awareness for a rare strain of cancer that has had a profound impact on her daughter’s life. Bianca Leder’s eldest daughter, Saskia, underwent extensive surgery to remove over 200 lymph nodes after she was diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer, a type of thyroid cancer that affects fewer than 100 individuals annually in the UK.
In an effort to raise awareness for early testing and generate funds for Young Lives vs Cancer, 51-year-old Bianca is set to brave a cold water dip in Loch Ken in Dumfries and Galloway on World Cancer Day. This day holds significant importance as it falls just a few days before Saskia’s 25th birthday. Bianca shared, “I wanted to do something as you just feel helpless as a parent. She has two social workers, one is from Young Lives vs Cancer, and this popped up on Facebook so I thought I’d do that.”
Saskia, residing in Manchester, was diagnosed with the rare medullary thyroid cancer in August. Despite visiting doctors, her symptoms were initially dismissed due to her age, causing a delayed diagnosis. Bianca stresses the importance of timely detection as it significantly impacts treatment outcomes. She emphasises the lasting effects of this type of cancer, highlighting the necessity for support beyond NHS provisions.
Saskia’s journey involved a major operation in November, where surgeons removed 204 lymph nodes, her entire thyroid, and performed a medium sternotomy. Although most of the cancer was excised, there remain remnants that will require ongoing treatment. Young Lives vs Cancer has played a crucial role in supporting Saskia and her family throughout this challenging period.
To give back and support the charity, Bianca is undertaking a cold water swim on World Cancer Day, aiming to raise £1,000. She hopes this endeavour will contribute to providing vital resources for those battling cancer. Bianca, known for her involvement in local initiatives, acknowledges the significance of community support in times of adversity.
