Superfit Mother’s ‘Pins and Needles’ Lead to Heartbreaking Diagnosis
A superfit mother in Scotland who used to effortlessly walk 10 kilometres daily now finds herself struggling to walk just 50 metres after receiving a devastating diagnosis. Jacqueline McGougan’s life took a drastic turn when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in September, following symptoms of pins and needles in her face and numbness on her tongue.
Despite grappling with the reality of her deteriorating health, Jacqueline remains resolute in not letting the condition hinder her aspirations. She aims to participate in the Glasgow Kiltwalk this April, a personal challenge for the mother of two – Ava, 13, and Rian, 10. MS hits close to home for Jacqueline as the disease also affects her uncle, great-uncle, and her mother.
Expressing her struggle with the diagnosis, Jacqueline disclosed, “It’s hard to get my head around it mentally. I’ve always been very active and used to walk 10 kilometres a day. Now I struggle to walk 50 metres. My head hasn’t caught up with what my body is doing.” She is determined to defy expectations and naysayers by embarking on the Kiltwalk despite the challenges posed by her condition.
Jacqueline’s story serves as an inspiration for others grappling with MS, as she urges individuals to seek the necessary support and assistance. She emphasises the importance of not hesitating to ask for help and highlights the significant role of organisations like Revive, which offer vital aid for those living with MS.
Following a referral from her MS Nurse, Jacqueline found solace and support in Revive MS Support, a charity providing specialized services for MS patients. In a bid to give back and aid the charity’s essential work, Jacqueline has launched a fundraiser, encouraging donations to support fellow MS sufferers.
Jacqueline’s unwavering determination to confront her condition head-on and pursue her goals stands as a beacon of strength and resilience for those navigating the challenges of MS. Her journey exemplifies courage, perseverance, and a relentless spirit in the face of adversity.
