Parents jailed for starving teen daughter who weighed just four stone

Parents Sentenced to Jail for Severe Neglect and Starvation of Teenage Daughter

A couple has been sentenced to jail after a shocking case of neglect and starvation was unearthed, leading to their teenage daughter weighing a mere four stone. The identity of the young girl, who suffered years of abuse, including being enforced on a strict vegan diet, has been kept confidential to protect her privacy.

The abuse commenced during her childhood and persisted into her teenage years, with authorities left horrified when they discovered her condition at the age of 17. At that time, she weighed only 4.4 stone, stood at 4ft 8ins tall, and physically resembled that of a nine-year-old child. The father received a sentence of six and a half years, while the mother was given a five-year prison term, both for neglect, as reported by the Mirror.

The girl’s parents isolated her, with her dance training being her only means of social interaction beyond the confines of their home in Perth, Australia. Concerns were raised by alarmed parents and teachers at her dance school, prompting the Australian Department of Communities to intervene in 2020 due to worries about her deteriorating health. Despite instructions for her father to seek medical help for her, he instead obtained a false letter from a GP claiming she was in good health.

Eventually, on April 1, 2021, the parents took their daughter to a GP under pressure. It was then revealed that her father had falsified her birth certificate to suggest she was 14 years old. The parents claimed this was a mistake after being confronted about it. Subsequent examinations disclosed her severe malnutrition, leading to emergency treatment at Perth Children’s Hospital with a diagnosis of grade 4 malnutrition.

During her hospital stay, which lasted 50 days, medical professionals meticulously managed her nutrition, resulting in a weight gain of 1.1 stone and an increase in height of 1.3 inches. Shockingly, despite her prolonging conditions, the court heard that the girl displayed no cognitive impairments, excelling in both piano and academic studies.

Judge Linda Black strongly criticised the parents, stating their willful blindness to their daughter’s deteriorating health was utterly unacceptable. She highlighted the stark contrast between the neglect the girl faced and the infantilising treatment she received, adding that they failed to provide the same level of care to their daughter as they did to themselves.

In a thought-provoking turn of events, the girl had penned a letter to the court the previous year pleading for the case to be dismissed out of fear of homelessness. Judge Black addressed this plea by pointing out the parents’ creation of a child unable to function as an adult even in her early twenties. She condemned their actions, emphasising their basic failure to provide for their daughter while ensuring they met their own needs.

In conclusion, the tragic ordeal of the teenage girl underscores the importance of vigilance and intervention in cases of neglect and abuse, serving as a poignant reminder of the duty to safeguard the welfare of vulnerable individuals within society.
