Dad dies after getting salmonella poisoning at four-star Canary Islands resort

A British father tragically lost his life after contracting salmonella during a family holiday in the Canary Islands last year. Leslie Green, aged 70, and his wife Julie had arrived at the four-star Occidental Jandia Playa resort in Fuerteventura on October 1, 2024. The £2,300 trip was intended to celebrate their birthdays, but sadly, just eight days later, on October 9, Leslie fell ill. His symptoms began with diarrhea, which quickly escalated to severe dehydration and rapid deterioration. Despite seeking help from the resort doctor on October 12 and being taken to a local clinic for fluids, Leslie’s condition continued to deteriorate. He was eventually admitted to the hospital where he received a diagnosis of salmonella poisoning.

While in the hospital, Leslie developed severe complications including kidney failure, pneumonia, and sepsis – a life-threatening condition where the body’s response to infection attacks its own tissues. Doctors placed him in an induced coma, but unfortunately, his health continued to decline. On November 4, just hours after the life-support machine was turned off, Leslie passed away. Julie and their daughter Becci, 35, were by Leslie’s side in Fuerteventura during his final moments. Their eldest daughter, Sarah, 38, who is battling end-stage kidney failure, was unable to travel due to her own critical condition. Leslie’s body was repatriated to the UK a week later, and a post-mortem examination was conducted on November 18, with pending results.

Julie, a retired NHS assistant nurse, raised concerns about the resort’s food safety practices, citing lukewarm carbonara sauce, undercooked chicken, and staff failing to adhere to proper hygiene practices such as handwashing and separating fresh food from older dishes. Jennifer Hodgson, an international serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell representing Julie, stressed the gravity of the situation: “This is deeply concerning, particularly as other guests from the same resort have reported similar experiences. The impact of salmonella and other gastric illnesses should never be underestimated, as Leslie’s tragic case shows.” An investigation into the resort’s practices is ongoing, with a commitment to securing answers and support for Julie and others affected.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Julie expressed her heartbreak at the loss of Leslie and the impact on their future plans for retirement. She described Leslie as a kind and gentle man who adored his family and had many interests. Julie emphasised the need for answers and accountability, highlighting the importance of preventing similar incidents from affecting other holidaymakers. Hodgson also warned travellers, especially those visiting Fuerteventura during the winter sun season, to exercise caution and seek support if needed.

In summary, the tragic death of Leslie Green underscores the importance of food safety practices in hospitality establishments. The devastating impact of salmonella poisoning on individuals and their families serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and accountability in ensuring the well-being of guests. Julie’s call for answers and justice highlights the enduring pain and loss experienced by those affected by such incidents, emphasising the significance of preventive measures to safeguard future travellers.
