A mother from Bellshill has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for assaulting another woman with a bottle, causing a permanent scar on the victim’s forehead. Stephanie Watson, 34, confessed to attacking Kirsty McKay on Burnside Avenue in Bellshill on September 14 last year, while already subject to three bail orders. The incident, recounted at Hamilton Sheriff Court, saw Watson emerge from her residence and confront McKay along with Deborah Young as they were walking a dog around 11pm.
According to the prosecution by Sinead Corrigan, Watson brandished a half bottle of wine and struck McKay on the forehead, resulting in a cut that bled profusely. The bottle remained intact as Watson proceeded to hit McKay another seven or eight times on her head and body, causing further injuries. McKay required hospital treatment for her wounds, which included bruising on her back and ribs. Defence solicitor Tony Linden highlighted underlying tensions between his client and McKay’s daughter, as Watson grapples with a challenging background and mental health issues.
Sheriff Mungo Bovey, in sentencing Watson, pointed out her prior convictions involving knives and the premeditated nature of the assault. The sheriff emphasized that the outcome could have been far more severe had Watson not taken a weapon to the confrontation. The court decision underscores the seriousness of the assault and the significant impact it had on the victim.
