Drivers across the UK have received a boost with a decrease in car insurance costs, as per new research from Compare the Market. The data shows that the average annual premium has gone down by £221 (a 23% decrease) compared to the previous year. In December 2024, the average premium stood at £729, down from £950 in December 2023, marking the lowest monthly average premium in almost two years. This reduction is attributed to a stabilisation in claim costs for insurers amidst a slowdown in inflation. Despite the overall decline, premiums are still £105 higher than they were in December 2022.
Interestingly, the drop in car insurance costs varies across age groups, with young drivers under 25 benefiting the most with a £425 decrease in their average premiums, now at £1,577. On the other hand, drivers aged 80 or above saw a £61 reduction in their average premiums. Geographically, London experienced the most significant drop in average premiums, down by £370 compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, in Wales, drivers only saw a £62 reduction in average premiums, with the average premium standing at £620.
Furthermore, the type of car can significantly impact insurance costs, with automatic cars costing on average £860 to insure in December 2024, £217 more than manual cars (£643 on average). This disparity is due to the higher purchasing price of automatic cars and the increased complexity of their gearboxes, making them more expensive to insure.
Julie Daniels, an expert at Compare the Market, advised drivers to compare car insurance policies online to potentially save up to £510. She emphasised the importance of not simply renewing with the current provider, as shopping around could lead to significant savings. The research revealed that 51% of consumers could achieve substantial savings on their car insurance premiums by using Compare the Market.
In conclusion, the decrease in car insurance costs presents a welcome relief for motorists amid financial pressures. It highlights the importance of regularly reviewing insurance policies to secure the best deals available in the market.
