A man identified as David Farquharson was apprehended after crashing into two parked cars in Shotts while attempting to escape from police officers. The 29-year-old man was arrested following a brief foot pursuit and subsequently threatened to harm the law enforcement officials. Farquharson appeared before Hamilton Sheriff Court, where he received a 12-month prison sentence and a seven and a half-year driving ban. He confessed to driving recklessly while disqualified and under the influence of alcohol, with his blood alcohol level being more than double the legal limit, on Muldron Terrace in Shotts on July 24.
The court proceedings revealed that Farquharson, who was out on bail for other charges during the incident, also admitted to engaging in threatening or abusive behaviour towards the police. Prosecuting lawyer Sinead Corrigan recounted that Farquharson was spotted driving a Ford Focus without its lights on at around 2:20 am. Upon sighting a police vehicle, he abruptly braked, reversed at high speed towards Northfield Avenue, and collided with two parked cars, including a Seat mobility vehicle, rendering it beyond repair. Farquharson and a passenger fled the scene, prompting a chase by the officers, resulting in his subsequent arrest.
During the encounter, Farquharson emanated a strong smell of alcohol from his breath and admitted to consuming a bottle of wine. He further threatened the officers, mentioning intentions to harm them. Defence solicitor Scott Jones cited Farquharson’s intoxication level compared to his companions’ as a contributing factor to his actions that night. Farquharson’s jail term was retroactively dated to his arrest, implying a potential early release under established regulations.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and the severe consequences that follow such reckless behaviour. The swift actions of the police officers in apprehending Farquharson prevented further potential harm to individuals or property in the area.
