Galloway Mountain Rescue Team Members Embrace Epic Challenges for 50th Anniversary Celebration

Members of the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team are gearing up to tackle epic challenges in honour of the group’s 50th anniversary. This volunteer-led team has been safeguarding individuals in the hills for five decades. To commemorate this milestone, some team members are pushing their limits to raise funds for the annual running costs, which amount to approximately £60,000.

Medical officer Ross McConchie shared, “Six of us have set a goal to complete 50,000 metres of ascent each throughout the year, totalling 300,000 metres as a group. This can be achieved through hiking, running, cycling, and all elevation data is being tracked on Strava.” McConchie explained, “Cairnsmore of Fleet stands at 740 metres above sea level, so completing this challenge would be akin to ascending and descending it about 55 times, essentially conquering Cairnsmore once a week.”

Moreover, other team members are dedicating themselves to performing 50,000 sit-ups, 50,000 press-ups, and 50,000 squat thrusts over the course of the year. Ross expressed, “This equates to 137 repetitions of each exercise daily.” In June, Ross and three other members will take on the Montane Spine MRT Challenger South, a gruelling 108-mile race along the Pennine Way, featuring nearly 5,500 metres of ascent from Edale, Derbyshire, to Hardraw, North Yorkshire. The team must complete the challenge within 60 hours.

Team leader, Stewart Gibson, highlighted the significance of the team’s running costs, underscoring the substantial financial commitment required to maintain operations. The Galloway Mountain Rescue Team was established in 1975 as the Galloway Search and Rescue Group, aiding in various missions including assistance following the Lockerbie air disaster. The team transitioned to become part of the Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland in 1983 and rebranded as Galloway Mountain Rescue Team.
