Scots Author Reveals How Alcohol Worsens Menopause Symptoms

Alcohol continues to be a significant topic of discussion in Scotland, with challenges like Dry January and Sober October aiming to support individuals in going teetotal for certain periods. However, the impact of alcohol consumption, even at moderate levels, can exacerbate existing health issues. In 2023, there were 1,277 reported deaths in Scotland due to alcohol-specific causes, marking the highest number since 2008. Alcohol Focus Scotland highlights that this equates to approximately one alcohol-related death per day. The effects of alcohol on health can vary between genders, and for women going through menopause, alcohol consumption can particularly worsen symptoms.

Ruari Fairbairns, the Scottish CEO and Founder of One Year No Beer (OYNB), a movement dedicated to transforming the UK’s relationship with alcohol, recently shared insights on the impact of alcohol on menopause symptoms. In a conversation with TV presenter Davina McCall for her podcast ‘Begin Again,’ Fairbairns described alcohol as the “kryptonite” for women experiencing menopause. He revealed that women who regularly consume alcohol are five times more likely to suffer from significant menopause symptoms. Fairbairns emphasised the importance of limiting alcohol intake, stating that exceeding six drinks of wine per week can have detrimental effects.

Fairbairns and McCall discussed how alcohol can exacerbate symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, and sexual changes during menopause. McCall highlighted that women often report feeling worse symptomatically when consuming alcohol, suggesting that women metabolise alcohol differently, leading to heightened hangover effects. Fairbairns stressed the need for open conversations about the negative impact of alcohol on menopause, emphasising that alcohol tends to exacerbate underlying issues rather than alleviate them.

With around 400,000 women in Scotland in the menopausal age bracket, addressing the relationship between alcohol and menopause symptoms is crucial. For those concerned about alcohol consumption, support services like the helpline at 0300 123 1110 and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) offer assistance. By highlighting the impact of alcohol on menopause symptoms, Fairbairns and McCall aim to raise awareness and encourage healthier habits during this life stage.

Insights:
The discussion around alcohol consumption and its effects on menopause symptoms is essential for promoting women’s health and well-being. By shedding light on how alcohol can worsen menopause symptoms, individuals can make informed choices to support their health during this stage of life. Fairbairns’ emphasis on open dialogue and awareness-building underscores the significance of addressing lifestyle factors that can impact women’s experiences during menopause. Encouraging moderation and understanding the potential implications of alcohol consumption can empower women to navigate menopause with greater ease and well-being.
