Paisley Man Warned of Possible Jail Time for Breaching Non-Harassment Order
A Paisley man, Shivram Thaper, faced a warning that he might be sentenced to jail after breaching conditions of a non-harassment order. The 28-year-old offender had been subjected to a two-year non-harassment order at Paisley Sheriff Court on April 22 the previous year. This order barred Thaper, with a history of convictions including domestic assaults, drug possession, and breaking into his ex-partner’s residence, from directly or indirectly contacting or approaching his ex-partner. However, on January 4, Thaper breached this condition by showing up intoxicated at his ex-partner’s workplace and demanding money from her. Procurator fiscal depute Abigail McKenna informed the court that Thaper and his ex-partner had been in a relationship for seven years until it ended in 2018.
On the said day, Thaper entered his ex-partner’s workplace in Paisley where she observed him appearing drunk at the front desk area. Despite her asking him to leave, he lingered for a brief moment before finally departing. Thaper tried to communicate with his ex-partner in an incoherent manner due to his intoxicated state. Subsequently, his ex-partner received a phone call from him demanding money back for funds he had provided for a family member’s birthday, leading her to contact the police. Thaper was traced by the police at his home later that day, arrested, and subsequently charged. Denied bail and remanded in custody, Thaper pleaded guilty early on. His defence agent, Kirsty McGeehan, cited alcohol as a primary issue and proposed a call for reports and further mitigation.
Shivram Thaper appeared before Paisley Sheriff Court on January 6, where Sheriff Brian Mohan ordered background reports due to the persistent nature of Thaper’s actions, considering his past offenses, including breaking into his ex-partner’s home the prior year. The sentencing was postponed until February 17 for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment. Thaper, currently incarcerated at Low Moss prison in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, remained in custody pending further proceedings.
