A grandmother from Scotland has been left unable to speak after being diagnosed with a rare neurological condition. Betty Campbell, 69, residing in Edinburgh, has recently been informed that she has Bulbar Palsy, a type of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) that affects the facial, throat, and tongue muscles. The initial symptom that caught Betty’s attention was a problem with her speech. As the condition progressed, she began experiencing difficulties swallowing, eventually leading to a complete loss of speech. Betty now relies on a text-to-speech app on her iPad to communicate with her loved ones.
Betty’s granddaughter, Rachel Mclelland, shared, “My nana has had ongoing issues for some time and underwent various tests over the past year. In late 2024, she received the diagnosis of Bulbar MND. It has been a significant emotional challenge for all of us.” Rachel added that Betty’s motor skills remain intact for now, but she struggles with swallowing and is following a soft food diet. While Betty is equipped with tools to assist her at home, such as a chair to maintain an upright posture, the progression of her symptoms remains uncertain.
To support her grandmother and raise awareness for MND, Rachel has organised a charity skydive fundraiser for the MND Association. Describing Betty as a selfless and strong individual, Rachel highlighted their close bond and the profound impact Betty has had on their family. Despite the difficulties they face, Rachel expressed pride in her grandmother’s resilience and the central role she plays within the family.
