Glasgow Educators Overwhelmingly Vote for Strike Action Against Council Budget Cuts
In a resounding display of solidarity, teachers in Glasgow have voted overwhelmingly in support of strike action, with 95% of the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) members in favour. The vote, with a 57% turnout, is a clear message against the budget-cutting measures imposed by Glasgow City Council. The EIS union has pointed out that these cuts have already resulted in a significant reduction in teacher numbers in the city and is calling for the council to halt and reverse these austerity measures.
Last year’s initial cuts put approximately 450 teaching positions at risk, causing around 120 job losses, with a further 300 expected this year, as reported by EIS. Andrea Bradley, the EIS general secretary, highlighted the impact of these cuts on both students and teachers, emphasising the negative effects on schools’ operation, the educational experiences of pupils, especially those facing socio-economic challenges, and the overwhelming workload placed on teachers.
Bradley urged Glasgow City Council to abandon their detrimental cuts and collaborate with teachers and unions to ensure the best education for the city’s youth. The EIS has firmly stated that the recent ballot result should compel the council to reconsider its decisions. A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council acknowledged the outcome of the ballot and the potential for strike action by the EIS members.
