A recent survey conducted by the British Transport Police has shed light on the feelings of staff and passengers riding Scotland’s railway network, labelling it the ‘most frightening rail line’. The survey revealed that just over a third of rail staff in Scotland feel safe while operating on the railways, with concerns primarily stemming from anti-social behaviour and drunken incidents. This finding contrasts with a more positive outlook from passengers, although regional discrepancies were evident.
In particular, the town of Dumbarton stood out as a location where only half of passengers felt secure, compared to 80% feeling safe in Edinburgh. Dumbarton is served by two railway lines, with some travellers expressing concerns about anti-social behaviour and football-related disorder. Despite efforts by ScotRail to ban alcohol consumption on trains, issues persist, leading to lower confidence levels in the British Transport Police amongst staff.
Regarding passenger safety, around 60% of staff lacked confidence in the British Transport Police, while 75% of passengers felt more secure knowing they were present. The Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers Union raised concerns about the high rates of attacks and harassment faced by railway staff, calling for legal actions against perpetrators. ScotRail reiterated its commitment to addressing anti-social behaviour and ensuring a safe environment for both passengers and staff.
Moving forward, the British Transport Police announced plans to increase high-visibility patrols to combat anti-social behaviour and enhance safety measures at identified hotspots. The safety and well-being of railway staff are of paramount importance, with a zero-tolerance policy towards assaults and abuse.
