North Lanarkshire Council Extends Support to Community
In a bid to alleviate pressure on food banks and provide immediate assistance to those in need, North Lanarkshire Council has made a significant contribution to emergency food support. The council has successfully processed close to 800 payments in its first year of operation, under the Scottish Government’s Cash First programme. This initiative aims to distribute funds to local councils for urgent referrals and provide follow-up support, such as benefit checks, to individuals facing food insecurity.
With a share of £200,000 from the total £1.8 million allocated to councils, North Lanarkshire Council’s Tackling Poverty Team has been actively managing urgent referrals and ensuring that immediate aid reaches those in need. The Cash First project, which was launched in November 2023, received 1,234 enquiries in its initial year, resulting in 793 individuals receiving direct payments to purchase food, thereby eliminating the necessity to visit food banks. Furthermore, all enquiries were followed up with benefit checks, leading to an additional £1.2 million in benefits being granted to eligible recipients.
Participants in the Cash First Project are encouraged to provide feedback through surveys to track changes in their levels of concern before and after receiving assistance. The scores from these surveys have shown a significant decrease in anxiety levels following intervention. However, assessing the impact of this service on food banks has presented challenges, as data collection from some food bank providers has been limited and inconsistent, reflecting a broader issue across various council areas.
The Cash First payments offered by North Lanarkshire Council include £25 for single individuals, £50 for couples and single parents, and an additional £15 for baby formula purchases. Additionally, single household fuel payments of £49 are available to those in need. Lone parents have been identified as the largest group benefiting from this support, with 178 payments made to individuals in this category. During a recent council meeting, councillors formally acknowledged the progress made and agreed to continue promoting the Cash First scheme, enhancing engagement with emergency food providers, and advancing a proactive approach to tackling emergencies.
