Labour MP from Scotland Issues Warning about Potential Far-Right Government
In a recent statement, Scots Labour MP Brian Leishman expressed concerns about the possibility of a future government with far-right leanings if the Labour Party fails to bring about meaningful change and improve living standards. Leishman, who represents Alloa and Grangemouth, was among 10 Labour MPs who supported a Bill introduced by SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn. The Bill aims to hold ministers accountable for addressing the findings of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman report, which recommended compensation for women born in the 1950s affected by changes to the state pension age.
During a session on Women and Equalities in the Commons, Leishman criticised the lack of progress in compensating Waspi women and the abandonment of Grangemouth refinery workers by both the Tory government and the SNP in Holyrood. He warned that failure to deliver on promised positive changes and improved living standards could pave the way for a far-right government intent on further impoverishing society.
In response, Work and Pensions minister Stephen Timms reiterated the government’s commitment to delivering change, citing efforts to address the Grangemouth situation and the decision not to provide compensation to Waspi women based on the claim that most affected individuals were aware of the pension age changes.
