Dumfries is currently the host to a new exhibition titled “New Scots Portraits” at the Gracefield Arts Centre. The exhibition showcases portraits of individuals who are in the process of rebuilding their lives in Scotland after facing upheavals in their home countries due to wars and other violent conflicts. Featuring people from various parts of the world, including families from Afghanistan and Ukraine who have found refuge in Dumfries, the collection aims to highlight the resilience and strength of these individuals as they seek safety and peace in Scotland.
Curated in collaboration with the Scottish Refugee Council, the exhibition sheds light on the changing landscape of refugee resettlement in Scotland. Historically, most refugees settled in and around Glasgow, but in recent years, there has been a shift towards resettlement in different regions across Scotland. Through the portraits, the exhibition acknowledges the support and warm welcome shown by communities across the country to those rebuilding their lives here.
Photographer Angela Catlin, known for her work on global human rights issues, captured the portraits of these individuals. Catlin remarked on the positivity and hope exuded by the subjects, many of whom spoke about the connections and friendships they have forged in Scotland, contributing to their sense of belonging in the community.
As part of the Scottish Refugee Council’s 40th-anniversary celebrations, “New Scots Portraits” is a poignant reflection of four decades of refugee reception in Scotland. The exhibition will be on display at the Cafe Gallery at Gracefield from January 28 to February 22, inviting visitors to contemplate the stories of resilience, hope, and determination embodied by those who have had to start anew in a foreign land.
