The scare at the railway station occurred when a man and his girlfriend developed flu-like symptoms while on a train from Frankfurt. They had been in contact with a man who later developed an infectious disease in another country. The man, believed to be a medical student, had come from Rwanda. The couple was taken to a specialist clinic by police and firefighters, leading to the temporary closure of platform four.
The outbreak in Rwanda has claimed eight lives so far, prompting the World Health Organization to advise against travel to the country. Efforts are underway to trace over 400 individuals who may have been in contact with the infected patients. Many cases are concentrated in or around Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, a significant international transport hub.
Marburg virus disease (MVD) is severe and often fatal, sharing similarities with Ebola. Both viruses belong to the Filoviridae family. The Marburg virus was first discovered in 1967 during outbreaks in Germany and Serbia, traced back to infected monkeys from Uganda. Transmission to humans is believed to occur through contact with animals like fruit bats, the natural hosts, or via infected bodily fluids.
Symptoms of MVD can appear suddenly after an incubation period of 2 to 21 days. There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for MVD, but supportive care can improve survival rates.
