Police Scotland Receives Reports of Nineteen Crimes Linked to OnlyFans Over Past Five Years
An investigation conducted by the Daily Record has unveiled that Police Scotland has received reports of nineteen crimes connected to OnlyFans in the last five years. Of these reported crimes, ten were categorized as “detected,” indicating that suspects were identified and there was ample evidence to pursue legal action. The reported offences range from cases of revenge porn to allegations of blackmail, stalking, harassment, distribution of child abuse material, and threats of violence.
In one instance in October 2023, a man reported that an explicit video was posted on OnlyFans without his consent. Another case from the previous month involved a suspect sending intimate photos and videos from a victim’s OnlyFans account via email to cause distress. There were also claims of attempted blackmail or sextortion, where victims were coerced into providing money or further explicit material under threats.
One disturbing report from September 2023 detailed a suspect demanding a subscription and a monetary tip in exchange for not disclosing private conversations. In yet another scenario from January that year, a woman was propositioned on Twitter to provide explicit content through her OnlyFans account for a fee. Subsequently, the suspect threatened to expose the footage unless more explicit content was provided.
The illicit activities associated with OnlyFans go beyond these reported crimes, with incidents implicating breaches of Sexual Offences Prevention Orders and cases involving the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. The platform, which has burgeoned into a £5 billion industry annually, has faced scrutiny for its role in facilitating harmful behaviours such as revenge porn and exploitation.
Charity CARE has called for decisive action from Scottish Ministers in collaboration with the UK Government to address the exploitation and risks posed by platforms like OnlyFans. Concerns have been raised regarding the platform’s oversight of harmful content, including underage material and exploitation of women in modern slavery.
Efforts have been made by OnlyFans to bolster its safety measures, with tightened procedures introduced in 2022 requiring consent verification for all explicit content creators. Despite these measures, challenges persist, as seen in the various criminal activities reported to Police Scotland over the years.
As the legal landscape evolves to address the risks posed by online platforms, it remains essential for law enforcement agencies, including Police Scotland, to investigate reported crimes thoroughly. The revelations surrounding crimes related to OnlyFans underscore the need for continued vigilance and action to safeguard individuals from exploitation and abuse in digital spaces.
