Residents at Motherwell tower block went without fully functioning laundry service for months

Residents at a tower block in Motherwell have been facing issues with their laundry service for several months. The laundry room at Doonside Tower was affected by a fire in June 2024, leading to the need for extensive repairs. Despite efforts by North Lanarkshire Council to complete all necessary works before Christmas, delays arose when it was discovered that a new Scottish Power Energy Networks supply from a substation behind the tower was required. The replacement of the substation equipment is estimated to take 12 weeks, pushing the resolution of the laundry service problem to at least May.

Councillor Nathan Wilson, representing Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig, has been actively communicating with the council and Scottish Power to address the situation. The council has reopened the laundry room with limited service, offering one washer and one drier for tenants to use until full repairs are completed. Wilson expressed concern over the extended timeline, highlighting the inconvenience for residents who have been without a fully functioning laundry service for nearly a year.

Wilson emphasised the importance of prioritising safety and prompt completion of the outstanding repair work to minimise further delays. He raised questions about why the need to replace the substation was identified only after plans were in place to restore the laundry service. The councillor’s advocacy for timely resolution reflects the frustration experienced by residents who rely on the laundry facilities within the tower block.

In light of these challenges, it is essential for authorities to not only address the immediate repair work efficiently but also improve communication and transparency to prevent similar delays in the future. The well-being and convenience of residents should remain a top priority in such situations to ensure that essential services are restored promptly and effectively.
