A Dumfries and Galloway woman, Jill Rennie, who tragically lost her husband to a brain tumour, is celebrating the opening of a crucial new research centre dedicated to combatting the disease. The newly inaugurated Scottish Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence in Edinburgh has been described as “great news” for Scotland by Jill Rennie from Gatehouse. Her husband, David, succumbed to glioblastoma (GBM) in November 2023 at the age of 62.
The opening of the research centre holds special significance for Jill, who has actively fundraised for the centre, including organising a tractor run with the Retired Farming Social Group. Jill, aged 62, expressed her optimism, stating, “Having this centre is just fantastic. It’s great news for Scotland and for those dealing with this horrendous disease.” She added, “To be at the official opening is so uplifting and it gives me great hope as it feels like we’re making progress in the search for a cure.”
Glioblastoma is a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer, with a bleak prognosis often giving patients as little as 12 months. The Scottish Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence, backed by Brain Tumour Research and Beatson Cancer Charity, will receive £2.4 million in investments. The collaborative effort between researchers from Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities aims to pioneer new treatments and facilitate patient access to clinical trials.
Dan Knowles, Chief Executive of Brain Tumour Research, highlighted the significance of the centre, emphasising the urgent need for advancements in treatments for GBM patients.
