A teenager in Motherwell town centre fell victim to a daylight attack, where he was robbed of his Nike trainers by two assailants. According to reports presented at Hamilton Sheriff Court, the young boy and his friend were walking towards the town centre when they were approached by a 17-year-old and another male. The attackers, who were known to the victim, engaged in a confrontation that led to the victim being knocked to the ground. Subsequently, he was subjected to kicks on his head and body by both attackers, who demanded he hand over his trainers.
After overpowering the young boy, the perpetrators successfully took his trainers and fled the scene. A passing motorist witnessed the incident and reported the robbery. The stolen trainers were later discovered at the nearby Motherwell train station. The victim sustained injuries including a bleeding nose, cut lip, and bruising from the assault.
The 17-year-old involved in the attack, whose identity remains protected due to his age, admitted his role in the incident on Bellshill Road that took place on May 5. During questioning by the authorities, he confessed to his actions, stating, ‘I won’t lie. I smashed him but he came at me first.’ The teenager is set to undergo background assessments and an electronic tagging evaluation before sentencing, which has been deferred to the following month by the court.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of violence and crime in urban areas, even in broad daylight. Such attacks not only cause physical harm but also leave a lasting impact on the mental well-being of the victims.
