West Dunbartonshire Council Faces Backlash After Spending Almost £2,000 on Leaflets Before Cancelling Festive Bin Collections

West Dunbartonshire Council has come under fire for spending nearly £2,000 on leaflets to inform residents about changes to festive bin collection dates, only to cancel the collections entirely later on. The council had initially planned to alter the bin collection schedule over Christmas and New Year, but ultimately axed all collections during that period due to a dispute with staff over holiday pay.

Residents were initially informed that bins scheduled for collection on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day would be emptied over the same weekend. However, the council later backtracked, stating that bins would not be collected until at least January 8. Despite already distributing information leaflets on residents’ bins, the council had to apologise for the last-minute change and acknowledge a “systematic failure” within the local authority.

A Freedom of Information request revealed that West Dunbartonshire Council spent £1,845 of public funds on the now redundant leaflets. The cancellations were attributed to “workforce resource challenges,” with the union representing waste collection workers having previously warned the council about staffing issues during the festive period.

Labour Councillor David McBride, the council’s convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration & Economic Development, apologised for the inconvenience caused to residents and pledged to find alternative solutions to prevent similar situations in the future. Meanwhile, Independent councillor Jonathon McColl expressed support for the workers, highlighting the need for fair treatment and consultation on changes impacting their working conditions.

The wasted expenditure on leaflets, in addition to the disruption in bin collections, has sparked criticisms from local councillors, with concerns raised about the impact on public services and potential long-term consequences. Despite the challenges faced, the council expressed gratitude to residents for their patience and understanding.

In conclusion, the incident highlights the importance of effective communication, proper planning, and respectful engagement with employees to avoid significant disruptions to essential services. It serves as a reminder for local authorities to prioritise transparency, consultation, and operational efficiency to meet the needs and expectations of the communities they serve.
