**Tragedy Strikes at New York City Marathon as Young Woman Dies After Collapsing**

In a heartbreaking incident this past weekend, a 24-year-old woman tragically died after collapsing during the New York City Marathon. Rachel Apa, hailing from Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, was in the midst of her first marathon, aiming to raise funds for Parkinson’s Champions in memory of her late father, who battled the disease.

Rachel’s father, Steven Apa, recounted to the New York Times that his daughter, who had seemingly been in “perfect health,” collapsed approximately 24 miles into the race in Central Park. Prior to the incident, family members had shared moments of joy with Rachel as they cheered her on. At mile 14, her parents captured her radiant smile, but as she progressed, everything changed dramatically. At mile 18, she sent her father a concerning text message saying “Ow, ow,” which prompted Steven to reassure her when she reached mile 23, stating she was approaching the final stretch.

Tragically, Rachel collapsed just a mile later. Eyewitnesses, including two doctors, rushed to assist, administering CPR until medical personnel arrived. Despite their swift efforts, including the use of a defibrillator, Rachel was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 9:40 PM on Sunday.

Following her passing, Steven Apa expressed his disbelief, stating, “It’s unfathomable. Perfect health, perfect shape, 24 years old.” He later learnt from medical professionals that Rachel’s death was attributed to rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition that can occur during intense physical activity, causing muscle breakdown.

The New York Road Runners (NYRR), the event’s organisers, released a statement expressing their sorrow over Rachel’s untimely death and extended their condolences to her family, friends, and the running community. They noted that the last recorded death of a participant due to a medical incident at the marathon was in 2024.

This tragic event sheds light on the potential risks associated with endurance sports, even for those who appear to be in optimal condition. Rachel’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the need for awareness about extreme physical exertion and its effects on the body.

**Summary:** The loss of Rachel Apa during the New York City Marathon is a devastating reminder of the unforeseen risks associated with strenuous athletic events. It highlights the importance of preventive measures and awareness in the running community to ensure participant safety.
