Speeding cancer patient jailed after killing pedestrian and fleeing the scene

**Speeding Cancer Patient Sentenced to Jail After Fatal Hit-and-Run Incident**

In a tragic incident in West Bromwich, a 66-year-old grandfather was sentenced to 14 months in prison following a hit-and-run that claimed the life of a pedestrian. Gladwyn Alleyne, a prostate cancer patient, was found to have been driving above the speed limit when he struck 44-year-old Jason Hicks, who was near the verge of safety at the time of the incident.

The court heard that Alleyne had consumed alcohol, having enjoyed two pints at a local snooker hall before getting behind the wheel of his black Mitsubishi 4×4. The fatal collision occurred on the evening of October 5, 2024, as Alleyne was travelling on the A41 Birmingham Road at speeds exceeding 40 mph, despite a 30 mph limit in the area. Prosecutors indicated that had Alleyne adhered to the speed limit, Mr Hicks would have had an additional two crucial seconds to cross the road safely, which ultimately could have prevented the tragic outcome.

Witness accounts described the horrifying moment Mr Hicks was struck, noting that he was “flung into the air” and landed severely injured on the pavement. Passers-by rushed to assist him, but despite their efforts and the subsequent emergency response, Mr Hicks succumbed to his injuries just moments later, suffering from a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures.

Following the collision, Alleyne was seen on CCTV exiting his vehicle and walking away from the scene, before leaving the area entirely. Upon being located the next day, he claimed to the police that he had been too upset to remain after witnessing the aftermath of the crash.

The court was informed that Alleyne had an extensive history of driving offences, including previous convictions for drink-driving and driving without insurance. His counsel, Danae Larham, argued that Alleyne was a devoted family man with mental health issues stemming from the incident and should be considered for leniency due to his circumstances. However, Judge Michael Chambers KC highlighted that Alleyne’s choice to flee after the collision was a serious aggravating factor.

In conclusion, the judge stressed the importance of remaining at the scene for both legal and moral obligations. Alleyne is now facing a driving ban of two years and seven months alongside his sentence.

This case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of reckless driving, particularly when compounded by the consequences of substance abuse. As we reflect on this tragic event, it underscores the necessity for all drivers to remain vigilant and responsible on the road, not only to protect themselves but also the lives of others.
