In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Liz conveyed the family’s profound sense of loss, declaring that they were “utterly devastated” by Richard’s sudden passing. She extended gratitude to friends and the community for their continued support during this extremely challenging time.
“The beautiful flowers, cards, texts, WhatsApp, and Messenger messages have brought us great comfort,” Liz remarked. “We have felt so much love, kindness and support from everyone, and it has meant more than words can say.” The family is currently finalising funeral arrangements, with details expected from Bendalls Funeral Directors.
Richard Baines was a distinguished botanist and the curator of the Logan Botanic Garden, part of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RGBE) network. He played a pivotal role in preserving various gardens across Scotland, including those in the capital, Peebles, and the Cowal Peninsula. His dedication to the field was evident during the tumultuous weather of December 2021, when he led efforts to recover from damage caused by Storm Barra, which had resulted in the loss of precious trees and specimens.
He was one of four fatalities reported in Scotland during the extreme weather event. Two others, Arran Callander, aged 20, and Jim McCollum, 84, lost their lives in a car crash in Bathgate on the same day. Furthermore, Tom Allan, a 63-year-old farmer, was tragically discovered deceased after going missing during the storm.
Storm Boelo, which brought severe winds of up to 80mph and heavy rain, has left communities across Scotland grappling with damage and loss. As families mourn their loved ones, the events underscore the relentless power of nature and the need for community strength in the face of adversity.
In summary, the sudden passing of Richard Baines highlights the tragic consequences of natural disasters and reflects the indelible impact one individual can have on both their profession and personal relationships. The outpouring of support for his family signifies the love and respect he garnered throughout his life, while serving as a reminder of the fragility of life amid the forces of nature.
