Mum ‘devastated’ as negligent employer fined for causing son’s death

**Mum’s Heartache as Employer Fined for Son’s Tragic Death on the Job**

A North Staffordshire mother has expressed her profound sorrow following the death of her son, Niall Fawcett, who was killed while undertaking a roadside tyre repair. The 21-year-old tyre-fitter tragically lost his life on the M56 in Cheshire, where an unsecure jack caused a heavy vehicle to fall, resulting in fatal head injuries.

In a poignant statement, Niall’s mother, Sharon, expressed her devastation over the loss. “Niall was only 21 years old when he died. He had his whole life ahead of him,” she reflected. “He was planning to marry the following year and he and his fiancée, Megan, were saving for their first home and discussing starting a family. Niall deserved better; he should have been safe and supported at work. Instead, my son never returned home.”

The unfortunate incident occurred in August 2024 while Niall was attempting to replace a blown tyre on a low-profile truck. As he worked beneath the vehicle, the bottle jack failed, causing the truck to collapse onto him. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has since prosecuted Halford Commercial Fleet Services Limited, the employer responsible for the oversight.

Court proceedings in Warrington Magistrates’ Court revealed that Halford Commercial Fleet Services Limited, formerly known as Lodge Tyre Company Limited, had neglected its duty of care to its employees. An investigation by the HSE uncovered that the company had not adequately assessed the risks associated with roadside tyre repairs and had failed to provide proper training or supervision to Niall, who had only recently obtained his commercial tyre licence.

As a result of this negligence, Halford Commercial Fleet Services Limited pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations and was fined £600,000, along with an additional cost of £24,203.

HSE principal inspector Laura Royales emphasised the need for enhanced safety measures in the workplace, stating, “This case should serve to highlight to employers the importance of properly assessing the risks to which their workers are exposed and providing the right information and instructions, supplemented by adequate monitoring and supervision arrangements.”

In conclusion, the tragedy faced by Niall Fawcett’s family serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of workplace safety. The emotional scars left by such losses emphasise the urgent need for companies to prioritise employee welfare and to implement robust training and supervision measures. Niall’s legacy may inspire a change in practices that could save future lives.
