Six migrants were tragically shot dead near the Guatemalan border after Mexican army troops opened fire on a truck carrying migrants from various countries. The victims included individuals from Egypt, Peru, and El Salvador, in an incident described by President Claudia Sheinbaum as “deplorable.” Additionally, ten other migrants were injured during the shooting.
This devastating event took place on Tuesday near the town of Huixtla in Chiapas, Mexico, close to the border with Guatemala. The Mexican Defense Department reported that soldiers allegedly heard shots as a convoy of three trucks approached their position. In the ensuing chaos, the soldiers fired on one of the trucks carrying migrants from Nepal, Cuba, India, Pakistan, and other countries.
As a result of the shooting, six migrants lost their lives, and 12 others sustained injuries. Local prosecutors confirmed that all the victims succumbed to gunshot wounds. The Defense Department did not clarify whether the migrants died as a result of army fire, and no weapons were reported to have been found in the migrants’ truck. Fortunately, 17 other migrants in the vehicle remained unharmed.
President Sheinbaum promptly took action by turning over the soldiers responsible for the shooting to civilian prosecutors for questioning. She emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to determine if any commanding officers should be held accountable for the tragedy, stressing that such incidents should never be repeated.
This incident marks one of the deadliest occurrences involving migrants and authorities in Mexico since 2021 when police in Tamaulipas killed 17 migrants. The unfortunate event has raised concerns among migrant rights activists and international organizations, with the UN agency for refugees in Mexico expressing worry over the risks migrants face during their journey.
