Lawler, a first-term Republican, expressed regret for his actions, stating that he was a fan of Jackson and was trying to pay homage to the music icon’s dance moves.
Lawler clarified that he did not intend to engage in the offensive practice of blackface and that his costume was meant as a tribute to one of his childhood idols. The congressman acknowledged the historical significance and sensitivity of such portrayals, expressing remorse for any offense caused. He emphasised the importance of learning from past mistakes and appreciated the understanding and forgiveness of others.
The incident comes at a crucial time as Lawler is facing a tough re-election battle for his congressional seat in New York’s Hudson Valley against Democratic former U.S. Rep. Mondaire Jones, who is Black. Blackface minstrelsy, which originated in the 19th century, has long been condemned as derogatory and disrespectful towards Black individuals. Numerous public figures and celebrities have faced backlash for donning blackface in the past.
