Labour MP Kim Leadbeater has asserted that the time is right for a debate on assisted dying, proposing plans for its legalisation in England and Wales. According to Leadbeater’s bill, terminally ill individuals with less than six months to live would have the option to end their lives. This marks the first time MPs have collectively addressed this issue since it was rejected in 2015. Leadbeater stated, “I’ve spoken to colleagues of all political persuasions and there is definitely an appetite to have this debate now.”
The bill is set to be formally presented to parliament on 16 October and would need to be approved by MPs before it can become law. This initiative by Leadbeater has sparked discussions across various political spectrums and has reignited the conversation around assisted dying in the UK.
