Why demand for diesel cars is surging ahead of electric vehicles despite all the discounts

Demand for diesel cars is on the rise, outpacing the growth of electric vehicles among private buyers, despite significant discounts offered. Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals that registrations of new diesel cars for private buyers in September increased by approximately 17.2%, equating to a rise of 1,369 units compared to the same month in 2023. In contrast, registrations of pure battery electric vehicles saw a year-on-year rise of about 3.7%, up by 430 units. The final figures are set to be published at 9 am on Friday.

September marked a milestone month for battery electric vehicle registrations, surpassing 56,362 units. However, industry leaders are calling for more support from the UK government to drive consumer adoption of electric vehicles. In a letter to Chancellor Rachel Reeves, major vehicle manufacturers such as Ford, Stellantis, JLR, and Volkswagen Group urged for measures like reducing VAT on new EV purchases and public charging to accelerate the transition to electric motoring.

The industry faces challenges in meeting zero emission vehicle mandates, with potential penalties looming for manufacturers that miss targets. Despite significant investments in electric vehicle technology and incentives, the market’s slow growth is raising concerns about achieving environmental goals and future investments. SMMT’s chief executive, Mike Hawes, highlighted the need for increased consumer support to drive the transition towards electric vehicles and mitigate market weaknesses.

Ian Plummer, commercial director at Auto Trader, emphasized the importance of addressing the cost disparity between electric cars and internal combustion engine vehicles to drive further interest and sales. While record discounts are driving initial interest, sustained efforts to overcome pricing barriers are essential to ensure long-term adoption of electric vehicles. Manufacturers are urged to continue innovating and implementing measures to make electric cars more accessible to a wider consumer base.

Despite the industry’s efforts to incentivize electric vehicle adoption, challenges remain in meeting regulatory targets and consumer demands. Enhancing affordability, expanding charging infrastructure, and addressing consumer concerns are crucial steps towards accelerating the transition to electric motoring. With ongoing developments and support from policymakers, the automotive sector aims to drive sustainable growth, reduce emissions, and secure a competitive edge in the evolving market landscape.
