A supermarket manager in Hamilton found himself in a dramatic situation when he wrestled with a shoplifter in an early morning incident at Tesco on Hillhouse Road. William Copeland, 36, entered the store at 6.30am and attempted to leave with £50 worth of meat without paying. The manager intervened, leading to a struggle between the two. Copeland, who was later apprehended, initially refused to hand over the stolen items and was reported to have made threatening remarks during the confrontation.
Following the incident, Copeland was charged with shoplifting and threatening or abusive behaviour. Despite the allegation that he was carrying a knife during the altercation being dropped, he was sentenced to 18 months in jail by Hamilton Sheriff Court. Copeland, who had a history of addiction issues, admitted to his wrongdoing in court, citing his struggles with heroin and valium addiction as contributing factors to his actions.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the manager had seen something metallic in Copeland’s hand, which led him to release the stolen goods. Copeland’s defence lawyer argued that what the manager saw was actually a set of keys, not a weapon as initially thought. Nevertheless, the judge decided to impose the prison sentence, taking into account Copeland’s prior criminal record and the circumstances of the incident.
