Dumfries women’s social group soars to more than 250 members

A women’s social group in Dumfries has seen a remarkable surge in membership, now boasting more than 250 members. The group, known as Dumfries Get Together, was founded by Diane McGowan and aims to keep women active and connected to prevent isolation. With weekly events, many of which are free, the group has become a vital community for its members.

Diane McGowan, the founder, expressed the increasing importance of socialising and staying active, especially in the wake of the Covid pandemic. She highlighted the group’s growth since its humble beginnings with just four members attending a coffee morning in 2010. Now, with over 250 members, Dumfries Get Together offers more than 30 events a week, encouraging members to participate as much as they like.

The group’s activities range from inviting speakers to organising trips and holidays for its members. Recently, the group enjoyed an adventure in Portpatrick, showcasing the diverse and enriching experiences provided by Dumfries Get Together. Diane emphasised that the group is a welcoming community where women can forge new friendships, have fun, and learn new things.

Dumfries Get Together meets regularly at Crichton Trust and has become a cornerstone of support and camaraderie for its members. To further expand their network, the group is looking to recruit even more members. With an annual membership fee of just £20, the group covers expenses for its website, premises, and other necessities.

Diane encouraged interested individuals to join their upcoming event at the Masonic Club this Sunday from 2pm to 6pm, with an entrance fee of £5. The event will feature entertainment by Jayde and Jenna from FitSteps, promising an enjoyable afternoon for attendees. As Dumfries Get Together continues to grow and thrive, it remains a testament to the power of community and connection in combating isolation and promoting well-being.
