Rutherglen roads are due to undergo significant improvement works with a £175,000 investment in the network. The planned works, focused in and around the town centre on A749 Stonelaw Road, Main Street, and Farmeloan Road, will be carried out over three phases to minimize disruption.
The first phase of works is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, October 12 and 13, which will involve the resurfacing of the junction of Main Street at Stonelaw Road. During this phase, there will be a closure of Stonelaw Road in all directions, the implementation of three-way temporary lights, and contraflow on Main Street and Farmeloan Road.
Following this, from Monday to Friday, October 14 to 18, carriageway repairs and lining works will take place on Main Street from Stonelaw Road to Mill Street. Various rolling lane closures in both directions will be in effect, but the road will remain open to traffic. Additionally, this phase will include the refurbishment of road markings, pedestrian guardrail repairs, and drainage improvements.
The final phase of the improvement works will occur on Sunday, October 20, with the resurfacing of the junction of Main Street at Farmeloan Road. During this time, there will be a closure of Farmeloan Road in all directions, three-way temporary lights, and contraflow on Main Street and Stonelaw Road. Signed diversion routes will be in place throughout each phase of the works to guide motorists.
Colin Park, head of roads, transportation, and fleet services at the council, emphasized that while road closures are necessary in certain areas due to safety concerns, access to properties and businesses within the closed areas will be maintained, albeit with some expected delays. He acknowledged the inconvenience road closures may cause and thanked motorists, residents, and businesses for their patience and cooperation during the works.
