Police in Glasgow are investigating a spate of vandalism where tyres were slashed and paintwork scratched on numerous cars across the city. The incidents occurred in Orkney Place in Govan on Monday, September 30. Shocked car owners woke up to find that their vehicles had been extensively damaged with hundreds of pounds worth of repairs needed.
Resident Rion McKerron described how his brother alerted him to the damage early in the morning. Several cars along the street, including Rion’s, had their tyres slashed. It is estimated that between 15 to 20 cars were targeted that night. Rion contacted the police, who indicated that they were looking into a possible connection between the vandalism and the new Partick to Govan bridge.
Authorities suggested that the motive behind the vandalism could be someone with mental health issues or frustration over parking difficulties stemming from the new bridge construction. Despite the damage, police mentioned that some cars had all four tyres punctured and paintwork further defaced with graffiti related to local groups like Govan Young Team and Pollok Young Team.
Rion incurred over £140 in expenses to replace his tyres as the local garage had run out of part-worn tyres due to the high demand following the incident. Reflecting on the event, Rion expressed his shock at the unprecedented level of vandalism in an area that historically had a good reputation for safety.
Police Scotland has confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the vandalism at Orkney Place. Meanwhile, residents are left unsettled by the targeted attacks on their vehicles in an otherwise peaceful neighbourhood.
