Legendary actors such as Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio have had their fair share of less-than-stellar performances throughout their illustrious careers. A recent article from The Independent highlights 17 awful performances by great actors that left audiences cringing. The list includes iconic talents such as Tom Hanks, Nicolas Cage, Halle Berry, Al Pacino, George Clooney, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Robert Downey Jr, Tom Hardy, Adam Sandler, Michael Caine, Naomi Watts, Idris Elba, Meryl Streep, and Glenn Close.
In the realm of questionable acting moments, even established actors like Tom Hanks have had missteps. In the film “Cloud Atlas” (2012), Hanks takes on various roles, one of which as gangster-turned-novelist Dermot “Duster” Hoggins, a performance critics deemed particularly cringe-worthy. On the other hand, Nicolas Cage’s portrayal in the 2006 remake of “The Wicker Man” was noted for its over-the-top performance that fell flat with audiences.
Halle Berry’s turn as Catwoman in the 2004 film of the same name was a notable low point in her career, despite her earlier success. Al Pacino’s appearance in the Adam Sandler comedy “Jack and Jill” as himself was also a memorable disappointment. Meanwhile, George Clooney’s portrayal of Batman in “Batman & Robin” did not receive praise for his portrayal of the Caped Crusader.

Even actors of the calibre of Leonardo DiCaprio have faced criticism for certain roles, such as his appearance in “J Edgar” (2011). Michael Caine’s involvement in “Jaws: The Revenge” (1987) did not lend him any favours either. Naomi Watts’s performance in “Diana” (2013), Idris Elba’s role in “Cats” (2019), Meryl Streep’s portrayal in “Into the Woods” (2014), and Glenn Close’s turn in “Hillbilly Elegy” (2020) also garnered less-than-flattering feedback.
