Dozens of zoo tigers have tragically died after contracting bird flu at a zoo in southern Vietnam. The incident, which took place at Vuon Xoai zoo in Bien Hoa city, resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen tigers. According to state media VNExpress, a caretaker at the zoo revealed that the animals had been fed raw chicken purchased from nearby farms.
The panther and 20 tigers, including several cubs, weighed between 10 and 120 kilograms (20 and 265 pounds) at the time of their deaths. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save them, the tigers became weak, refused to eat, and succumbed to the illness within just two days. The bodies of the animals were incinerated and buried on the zoo premises.
Samples taken from the infected tigers tested positive for the H5N1 virus, which is known to cause bird flu. The virus, first identified in 1959, has evolved over the years and poses a significant threat to various animals, including domesticated pets like dogs and cats. In some cases, the virus has been found attacking the brains of cats, leading to severe health complications and even death.
Following the outbreak, more than 20 other tigers at the zoo were isolated for monitoring while the authorities continue to investigate the situation. The zoo is home to over 3,000 animals, including lions, bears, rhinos, hippos, and giraffes. Despite the devastating loss of the tigers, the 30 staff members responsible for their care tested negative for bird flu and remain in good health.
This recent outbreak is not an isolated incident in Vietnam, as another zoo in the nearby province of Long An also reported cases of bird flu among its animal inhabitants. The deaths of these wild animals highlight the risks associated with keeping them in captivity, as noted by PETA Senior Vice President Jason Baker. He emphasized that such exploitation can also endanger global human health by increasing the chances of another pandemic.
Bird flu has caused numerous deaths worldwide, with most cases involving direct contact between infected birds and humans. The incident in Vietnam serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining strict biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of such diseases within animal populations and to protect human health.
